Thank you for your feedback. It’s positive to read your reflections about the NSPCC Helpline during your time with us. We understand shift work can have an impact on individuals and to help, we have introduced hybrid working to help manage some of the shifts; our 3pm-11pm shift is only worked from home. As you have noted, we have brilliant managers and opportunities to develop which again is supportive to staff working across all shifts. If you have anything further to share, please contact kam.thandi@nspcc.org.uk

Hard Times.

Pros

Some genuine nice people pass through, so you get to meet some nice people and make friends and feel supported and part of a wider team.

Cons

A big silo of other silos. No diversity. Earned less than the living wage for 2 years, friends working in bars and restaurant kitchens earned more. Living and paying rent and bills was a struggle and monthly debt When speaking with management mock empathy and a hard no but then increase work load and continually criticised, very toxic. very hard place to work if not in the in crowd. It's obvious that opportunities for growth and development and progression and fair salary are only very specific set of people that work here - if different to this specific set, there is no chance. Good people leave in droves. Old boy and girls network stays.

Pros

*The work itself is genuinely meaningful. *Strong safeguarding frameworks and clear ethical boundaries *most colleagues are kind, values led and genuinely care about young people

Cons

*emotionally demanding with exposure to regular high risk traumatic content *kPI pressures high. For some part time workers unachievable - acknowledged by senior management but no changes made. *poor support from management, including poor, inconsistent or completely lacking supervision opportunities *staff wellbeing does not feel valued *Night / Twilight practitioners are left isolated *retention appears very challenging *terrible annual leave process, particularly challenging for parents / those with additional responsibilities *Not family friendly

Pros

Flexible working, they always consider staff circumstances and are willing to work around your needs

Cons

Pay progression is limited, though there is lots of opportunities to be seconded to other roles. Lots of pressure to perform and you are expected to do a thousand things under one job role

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide a review of your time as a Schools Co-ordinator. it's good to note that you found the organisation able to balance the needs of the business with your individual needs. We know that offering flexible working is highly valued by our people. The Schools Co-ordinator role is a varied role and one which enables us to reach over 1 million children a year with key safeguarding messages. If you would like to discuss your experience of the role in more detail please do make contact with our Local Services Director Karen.squillino@nspcc.org.uk who would be really happy to hear from you.

Pros

Interesting job Opportunities to progress from volunteer to employed role.

Cons

I regularly have dreams where I’m either crying and distressed because I’m leaving as there was no occupational or any support when I had a work related break down due to burn out or where I’m returning and confused about being asked to return. There’s been a loss of earnings as a result of what happened and I’ve lost out on around £10’000each year since leaving in earnings since as well due to the damage to my career path which I’m still trying to get back on track with. A job I dreamed about after being a volunteer turned into a nightmare because of bad management and it’s still unresolved as a result of a lack of accountability from management that provides ‘counselling’ and mental heath support. This almost destroyed me and set me back but they got away with it, without an apology.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that elements of your time with us felt difficult. It’s important to us that staff feel supported, listened to, and able to raise concerns safely. We are continually working to strengthen how we support our people, including supervision, reflective practice, training, and opportunities to share feedback and we recognise there is always more to do. Feedback such as this is taken seriously and helps us to reflect on what is working well and where we need to improve. While we can’t respond to individual circumstances in detail here, we would always encourage current or former colleagues to share feedback directly where possible, so it can be explored and learned from more fully. Thank you again for sharing your perspective. We wish you all the best for the future. Shaun Friel Childline Director

Pros

Amazing cause. Excellent flexibility and work/life balance.

Cons

Lack of opportunities and progression. Lots of people sitting pretty in management and not moving on. Pay is terrible. People move on because they can’t afford to stay any longer. Fine with a young family when you need flexibility but no good if you want a career. Lots of female employees in community fundraising for a reason! The charity takes advantage of this.

Thank you for leaving a review. It is so encouraging to read that our flexible working policies are helping to make NSPCC a great place to work for you. We are certainly a place where people work for a long time, whether through career progression or in a role they simply love. We know from our staff engagement surveys that the purpose of working at NSPCC; making the world a better place for children and young people; is important and often more important than an increase in salary. We do our best to pay a good wage but do appreciate that other organisations can pay more, which is why our policies are as flexible as they can be to give our staff a great work/life balance. In fundraising, career progression does sometimes mean taking a sideways move to get to know another area of fundraising. A Director or Head of Fundraising, often has a broad experience in fundraising and supporter engagement, rather than a narrow progression up the seniority route.

Many thanks for leaving a review. Feedback is valuable for us in improving the experience of our staff and volunteers, creating the best environment to thrive and raise funds for our work with children and young people. Your comments regarding our database and processes are very much recognised. However, I am sorry this may have made your job harder than it should be. We have already started a project to create our single supporter view (CRM). It is a complex undertaking; however, we are committed and have investment available.

Pros

Supporting young people is rewarding Some colleagues are great - supportive, driven and work well as a team Some flexibility Goood training/cpd (but not progression)

Cons

As others have said management is problematic in a number of ways, particularly micromanagement. I've seen bias within the organisation/team. I've felt overworked at times and the true value of work isn't reflected in pay. Pay varies among people doing the same job. You can clock up a lot of TOIL but taking this off leads to a cycle of playing catch-up. If they had to pay overtime they might have more realistic and better thought-out expectations. Little opportunities for progression especially for BAME staff. Seems to always be cutting jobs/restructuring.
