Why are pot hole covers round and not square?

10 Answers

It makes sense to make them round because they can not fall through if ever accidentally uncovered. If squeare => the lid falls in diagonally. Less

So that if someone mistakenly drops it in on its side it won't fall into the hole. A square cover dropped mistakenly diagonally on its side would fall in. Less

Its because the round shape causes the impact of cars and trucks to be distributed evenly. If it was square, the impact would be highest at the corners causing the cover to break. Less

You get an hour to prepare for a case study - and delivering your ideas on a white board. After the hour is up - you present your case to a manager. The case study was not "difficult" but rather lengthy. I did not have enough time to finish everything I would have liked to. Be prepared to get your most valid points out before diving into the details - and read the entire case study before starting. Some important information lies at the end of the case study document.

Brain Teaser: Blindfolded. In a room with 8 coins. What is the minimum number of flips required to guarantee that one of the permutations had all coins with the same side?

There is only one way to get all heads and one way to get all tails. Total probability of getting the same set is 2/2^8. The expected time it takes for a result of probability p to appear is 1/p. So the answer is 2^7 = 128 Less

Sorry a typo, it should be 2^(n-1) - 1

Any answer? I would say : (1/0.5)^8

If you have a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug how do you get exactly 4 gallons?

2 Answers

Fill the 3 gallon. Pour into the 5. Fill the 3 gallon again, pour into the 5. You now have a full 5 gallons and 1 gallon left in the 3 gallon. Dump the 5 gallon out. Pour the one gallon into the 5 gallon. Fill the 3 gallon and pour into the 5. You now have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. Less

Fill the 5 gallon jug and transfer the 3 gallon to 3 gallon jug, what remains in 5 gallon is 2 gallons . Collect this 2 gallon. repeat the same to collect another two gallon. Add the 2 gallon(collected)+ 2 gallon (later) = 4 gallon Less

Write a function to determine whether a point lies within a triangle (2D space).

3 Answers

I knew how to do this in 3D because I'd done it numerous times before, but my mind panicked and blanked and I couldn't figure out how to step back to 2D. I ended up doing it in 3D, which confused them but they let it slide. Basically, if you had triangle a,b,c and point p, you check to see if point p lies on the same side of each line (e.g. ab) as the third point (e.g. c). I did this by setting the z value of all vectors to 0 (since it was 2D space), taking the cross products abxap and abxac (for example) and seeing if the resulting vectors' z values had the same sign (both negative or both positive). There's a better way to do it in 2D though. Less

Let the triangle is abc and the point is p. Then calculate the area of the three triangles abp, acp and bcp. if the sum is not equal to the area of abc then the point is outside. Less
