Upper Management, If the manager is good then everything is good, some of the managers are here with the service based mentality in this product based org which is bad.

Pros

- Great benefits - 1/2 days in the office - Good exposure in insurance, asset management

Cons

- Office politics: You are judged on your networking skills more than actual work - Does not want to embrace new ways of doing things: If you can repeat the same process with perfection, you’re applauded but you’re not rewarded enough for pushing for change or coming up with new ideas - Success at your job is pleasing the upper management - Less respect to lower level employees (company hides behind “opportunities”, good benefits policy to pay less to employees) - Shocking low pay with no clear answer on pay, progression - Management will take away opportunities from you to keep you and your peers at the same level (only some people who are extroverted can make it; not introvert friendly) - Expectations not clear; they never give you a clear sense of what they want you to do or what success looks like (you are supposed to act like you’re a director, avp or vp all at the same time) - Heard this from many people that the only real way to get promoted fast is to get competing offers (so the mgt tries as much as possible to not promote you or pay you more despite your contributions)

Low pay, high stress

Recommend

Pros

Sabbatical, even though you have to use your PTO to take it. Bonus, but based on your performance and the company’s performance.

Cons

All they care about is quantity and I’ve seen an enormous decrease in the quality of our deliverables. If you can do your job quickly, that is all they care about. Management pretends to care and tells you to be patient but nothing is ever really done, including hiring ENOUGH people to actually meet the demands. The pay is very low for the pressure, stress, and constant changes and yet, if you complain about any of the above, you are seen as a problem, unadaptable, and ungrateful. They do performance based annual reviews and really it’s just a way for them to justify not giving cost of living raises. Management and upper management plays favorites and everyone knows who the favorites are and aren’t. The DEI training is a joke so they can tell everyone they are a woke company. Certain employees are extremely unprofessional yet keep getting opportunities and promotions. Extremely toxic work environment.

Pros

Stock and pension program Benefits Flexible use of "care days" (personal days)

Cons

NOT COMPETITIVE PAY - other insurers have starting salaries at Sun Life's high end for the exact same job position. Some jobs are starting at nearly minimum wage. The company publicly announced they were going to be fully remote and have since back-tracked and are now mandating in-office attendance with no flexibility for exceptions. They've increased the mandate so fully expect them to continue to push more days on the future. Poor transparency - you'll get given a corporate walk-around answer from upper management. In an old department, I was denied a role multiple times that I was qualified for and I 100% know now it's because I was pulling numbers in the role I was currently in and they didn't want to lose my numbers there. They ended up losing me to another department due to it. I applied before I was ready a couple times to show my interest but the last two times I was amply qualified and deserving. Like every other corporate company, the CEO and upper management care more about their bottom line than the morale and happiness of their staff. The company says they care but don't actually show actions that prove it. You may have a good manager which helps, but some department managers are awful. For years they've sent out employee satisfaction surveys and people are telling them what they want, but they will do anything except pay more and stop mandating in-office attendance - literally. They put out free fruit that is rotten in the past, but now even that stopped, coffee and sparking water, and set up events that people are fine without. PAY PEOPLE MORE AND LET THEM WORK FROM HOME! That's what they really want! Stop sending surveys if you're not doing anything positive with the information. **Compensation and benefits shouldn't be star-rated together because benefits are good, pay is poor.
